Description

The environmental problems caused by reactive nitrogen are prominent. A massive amount of embodied materials are reassigned or shared among different countries worldwide, which is a significant growth booster for the economy of many countries. A large amount of virtual nitrogen is transferring among different regions via global trades. However, whether the interests are mutual for all members needs more in-depth analysis. National nitrogen footprint has been defined as the quantity of reactive nitrogen emitted during the production, consumption and transportation of commodities consumed within a country, whether those commodities are produced domestically or internationally. The virtual nitrogen network is profoundly entwined with the extended system, Water-Energy-GHG nexus. However, a very limited study was designed to identify the embodied nitrogen flows and the regional pattern of nitrogen transmission under the global trade circumstance. Virtual nitrogen can better reflect the linkages amount of different economies and reveal the regional pattern of nitrogen transmission. This study aims to identify the nitrogen network embedded in international trade products. The key impact factors for shaping this network have been explored as well. It provides decision-making support to be applicable for better cope with the possible consequences of climate change.
