Description
The costs and emissions in industry can be reduced by applying Process Integration (PI), which started as Heat Integration (HI) [1]. HI has been extensively used in the processing (e.g. chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, food and drink) and power generating industries [2]. It allows reducing the amount of external heating and cooling, together with the related cost and emissions.
The presentation starts with an overview of PI and HI. Focusing on HI, the implementation and Data Extraction issues are analysed, demonstrating the importance of preservation of data and reasoning continuity. The Total Site Integration (TSI) targeting is then discussed, where it is shown that accounting for individual process heat transfer characteristics and capital cost provide important information at the stage of targeting. The usefulness of HI is illustrated on a bromine plant example. The presentation then analyses the challenges and indicators to be considered, to enable sustainability evaluation and emissions impact of industrial sites. These include GHG and Water footprints, supplemented by investment and total cost targets.
The final part of the presentation provides an analysis of the PI development trends, clearly showing the need for a unified modelling and workflow framework, as well as for the introduction of the essential indicators of the energy system performance – energy costs and environmental footprints.
